Can I just say it’s good to be home? As much as I love it out in Richmond, nothing beats the familiarity of the place I grew up! Today was filled with shopping with Mom, a haircut with the only stylist I trust, and dinner out at my favorite restaurant. Yep, it’s definitely good to be home!
After Mom and I had a little shopping spree at Ann Taylor LOFT this afternoon, we made a quick stop so I could get my hair trimmed. I still haven’t branched out enough in Richmond to let anyone else cut my hair. I love Brown & Deline in Ann Arbor, and Carly, my stylist, always does the best job, so I’ve worked it out to get my hair cut whenever I’m home. So far, it seems to be working out! I don’t think I’ve gotten too scruffly looking between trims!
Then, we headed out to dinner at my favorite restaurant in the area, The Common Grill!
We started out with a bottle o’ red because that’s how we roll.
We also shared some Crispy Parmesan Portabello Fries.
We were a little hungry at this point, so this photo was taken late in the game. They were amazing, obviously. Crispy and crunchy with a little red pepper aioli on the side–what’s not to love?
For dinner, I started with a Tuscan Pear Gorgonzola salad:
They use butter lettuce on this puppy. I know it’s nuts to swoon over lettuce, but this stuff is the ish. Just saying.
Dad had a little chowda:
That’s a big ol’ shrimp on the spoon! I was amazed that it tasted so fresh–like the sea! Just what you would expect from fresh seafood in Florida, but in Southeast Michigan. Nice job, Common Grill!
For dinner, I had my very favorite thing on the menu, the Grilled Alaskan Halibut.

Creamy Roasted Fingerling Potatoes, Buttered French Beans
I know it might seem boring to get the same thing every time, but this meal is so spot on every time, I just can’t pass it up! Crispy, salty pancetta, creamy fingerling potatoes, and buttery green beans . . . oh, and the halibut’s not too shabby, either!
The chef and owner, Craig Common, is a golfing buddy of my dad’s, so I asked him about the menu before ordering. He re-affirmed my choice; the halibut is his favorite, too. Good to know I have good taste!
Mom and Dad both had the Parmesan Encrusted Whitefish.

Such a pretty dish! Too bad I was too focused on my halibut to snag a bite.
I cleaned my plate, but knowing how amazing The Common Grill’s desserts are, I couldn’t pass it up! My sweet tooth being what it is, of course I couldn’t pick just one! And so
I ate we shared two desserts!

I think my mom got maybe one bite of this. Dad got to look at it. I inhaled the rest before he ever had a chance. I tend to be a little possessive when it comes to sharing dessert.
As usual, the Common Grill did not disappoint! Love that place. And had such a great time with my parents, too!
We had the best time. It really took me back to when I was a little girl. My brother would go to see his dad every other weekend, and then it was just me, Mom, and Dad. Those weekends were our special time together. It was so nice to get to do that again.
